JAN & MIKE STRANGER, BC, CANADA

Don’s knowledge of the process of winemaking is outstanding. His understanding of the Hawke’s Bay and Esk Valley regions is thorough and his hospitality is exemplary.

KATHARINE, AUCKLAND

We were fortunate enough to spend a whole day with Don. He imparted his knowledge and passion for Hawkes Bay wines to us throughout the day. His friendliness and humour made us feel welcome and we felt privileged to be in his company. We will fondly remember our tour and highly recommend Don as a host.

HILARY & JOHN, UK

Now that’s what I call a wine tour! As owners of a small UK vineyard and previous visitors to Hawke’s Bay, we were looking for something that gave us more than a group tour. From the moment Don picked us up in the morning, until the moment we said a somewhat reluctant farewell at the end of the day, we were shown so much more – he really ‘knows his stuff’!!!

DAVID & TRISH SCHISCHKA, AUCKLAN

Don identified what we were looking for and created a day tour to meet our specific needs. Don put together a unique harmony of wine education, access to restricted vineyard areas, wonderful lunch with a blind tasting, local history and sightseeing. A truly educational and memorable experience. Well worth it, highly recommend, do it!

JANET, UK

A friend and I had a private tour with Don — we visited two wineries (one where the tasting experience included five wines) and we enjoyed drives through the beautiful countryside enjoying the experience of seeing NewZealand’s varied landscape as well as a pleasurable tea break at Don’s home. Don is a wonderful tour guide and host who enjoys taking his guests wherever they want to go and from whom much can be learned both about winemaking and about New Zealand.

MARTHA, AUSTRALIA

A great tour of Napier, wineries and countryside. He’s a third-generation winemaker with great knowledge and tales to tell. It was a fantastic wine tasting with a winemaker — we learned so much. Don gave great information about Napier and its history. A visit to Don’s farm in the hills with a fabulous view and the opportunity to meet Roslyn and sample her homegrown and homemade treats made the tour a very special memory of Napier.

Travel north along the coast to the beautiful Esk Valley via the vibrant seaside village of Ahuriri. Learn about the historic Maori settlement and the changes that the 1931 earthquake brought about.

Visit ‘The Grange’, your host’s farm with amazing rural, coastal and city views. Stroll around Roslyn’s beautiful country garden. Enjoy feeding the sheep and other animals as we introduce you to New Zealand life style farming.

Taste wine amongst the vines, in your host’s Esk Valley vineyard, while Don explains the meaning and importance of ‘Terroir’ and its contribution to wine quality. The red wine was produced from grapes harvested from this vineyard.

Visit two of Hawkes Bay’s iconic wineries:

– Church Road Winery is one of the oldest wineries in New Zealand. Their journey started with a young Tom McDonald whose passion for wine saw him forge both a remarkable legacy and enviable future for Hawke’s Bay winemaking and Church Road Winery. Today, their current Chief Winemaker Chris Scott continues this dedication to creating exceptional wines, combining traditional winemaking practices coupled with innovative techniques.

– Mission Estate Winery was established in 1851 by pioneering French Missionaries. It is New Zealand’s oldest winery and the birth place of          New Zealand wine. Mission Estate Cellar Door is housed in an elegantly restored seminary building, offering visitors sweeping views of the vineyards and the coast beyond.

At each of these two wineries you will be treated to a private wine tasting hosted by Don, a winemaker with 40 years experience in the industry. The tastings will include Reserve quality wines showcasing the best of Hawke’s Bay.
