Explore Hawke’s Bay’s wineries with your host Don Bird. He is a third-generation New Zealand Winemaker with 40 years experience in the Hawkes Bay wine industry. See Don’s outstanding tour reviews here. Don’s Grandparents established the acclaimed Esk Valley Estate Winery in the 1930’s. Don studied Oenology at Roseworthy College in South Australia before returning to New Zealand to take over the winemaking role from his father.
Don’s wines have been awarded two trophies and many gold medals in competitions both in New Zealand and international venues. Don has a son (fourth generation) making wine in Germany. It is Don’s deep passion for wine that encourages him to share his knowledge of viticulture, winemaking and wine appreciation with others. Don has formed close relationships with the wineries, ensuring that his guests receive special attention and tasting upgrades. The tours are always hosted by Don as he does not believe in hiring drivers.
